Asbestos Cancer Causes

Asbestos cancer or mesothelioma is a dreaded form of cancer which affects the lungs, stomach, abdomen, and the heart. The most common form, the pleural mesothelioma, is the cancer caused to the lungs by deposits of asbestos particles. The asbestos cancer which affects the stomach or abdomen is called the peritoneal mesothelioma. The pericardial mesothelioma affects the heart. It is estimated that most of the people in the United States have asbestos in their bodies. These asbestos fibers are entering the body along with air and water. Those fibers deposited in the lungs and heart have very little chance to escape from there. The indestructible nature of asbestos causes cancer. It affects the protective cover of the internal organs called the mesothelium.

Asbestos is a fibrous mineral. It divides into smaller size again and again until they become very small in size and can be seen only by electron microscopes. They are very light weight also and float easily in the air.

The major cause of asbestos cancer is obviously exposure to asbestos. The places where asbestos is handled are likely to have tiny asbestos particles in the air. Those who are constantly exposed to the air containing these fibers inhale them and the fiber gets deposited in the lungs. This being an indestructible material causes constant irritation to the tissues in the lungs. That results in inflammation in the lungs and cancerous cells are formed there. Since asbestos is fireproof, it is widely used as building material, stove lining, flooring, ceiling, even aprons and many more purposes. That is how most of the people are exposed to the danger of inhaling asbestos particles.

About 10 to 20 percent of the asbestos cancer patients in the United States suffer from the peritoneal mesothelioma or cancer affecting the stomach or abdomen. Asbestos particles enter into the stomach through food and drinks and get deposited there. In the atmosphere of the asbestos mines, a great number of minute particles of asbestos float in the air all the time. It naturally settles into the food and drink supplied in that area. It easily goes into the digestive system through these food and drinks. While the food passes through the system, the fibrous asbestos gets deposited there and causes cancer. Another way for asbestos fiber to reach the digestive system is through the blood stream. Some of the fiber in the lungs break into smaller particles and get into the stream and go to stomach through it.

The exact causes of pericardium asbestos cancer are not very clear. But it is caused by asbestos particles for sure. It is not yet established conclusively how it reaches there. It is believed that the asbestos fiber deposited in the lungs is transported to the pericardium through the lymphatic system. Another possibility of reaching there is through the blood stream.

In any case, those who are constantly exposed to asbestos particles in the air must report to their doctors the slightest doubt about contracting the asbestos cancer. It will go a long way in getting investigated and obtain timely medical help.

Asbestos cancer or mesothelioma when diagnosed in a person makes it hard to accept no matter how much you are prepared for it. It makes matters worse when you realize that it could also have been prevented. But once a diagnosis is made, there are lots of things that have to be taken care of and very less time at your disposal. Consultation with various doctors on how to combat the disease effectively and the various treatments may prove to be a great financial strain. Hence it is advisable to get in touch with an experienced, knowledgeable, and reputed attorney who is familiar with the legal aspects of mesothelioma cases.

Once an asbestos cancer lawsuit is filed with a mesothelioma attorney, there are a number of legal steps that follow. They are;

Preparation for the lawsuit: This is the very first step and is basically the preparation for the lawsuit to proceed further. It involves the collection of important papers and documents which determine the direction the case will take. When a lawsuit is found viable by the law firm then an attorney is hired and the client will be asked to sign a variety of paperwork. This is nothing but an agreement between the client and the law firm

.

Filing of the legal documents: This is the first and the foremost official step in a lawsuit. This involves the filing of the legal documents in the appropriate jurisdiction there by informing the defendant or defendants about the lawsuit against them. This legal document will contain all your intentions including financial and medical compensation and support from the defendant. The defendant is also given a certain period of time to respond to the lawsuit.

Time for discovery: This is the time between the filing of the lawsuit and the final settlement or trial. This involves a series of steps like the:

vFiling of motions

vTaking depositions

vGathering detailed information necessary for the lawsuit

vGathering medical records and other important documents

During this period, the defendant may ask various questions which will be answered by you with the help of your attorney. It can also be the other way round but whatever be the outcome, your attorney will be with you throughout the proceedings.

Trial time or the final settlement: Most of the cases opt for an out of the courtroom settlement but some cases go all the way to face the trial and finally go in for a settlement with the intervention of the court. During the trial both the parties are allowed to present the evidences and witnesses followed by the rebuttals and the deliberation by the jury. Finally, the trial closes by the reading of the verdict.

In case the jury passes a verdict in favor of the plaintiff, then the defendant can go for an appeal or decide not to. If not, then the plaintiff will start receiving the compensation a few months from the closure of the trial.

Asbestos is a natural product that has been used for a variety of purposes and many people around the globe has used it and in some parts, it is still using. However, recent studies show that the dust and fiber of asbestos cause a serious cancer which is termed as mesothelioma. Now the use of asbestos is banned in many countries, but still in some places it is used. In the United States, people who are exposed to it are mainly from the industrial setting – employees working in government and private shipyards, oil refineries, chemical plants, power plants, machine shops, foundries and the likes.

Asbestos cancer is a serious problem that has its root from exposure to asbestos. When a person inhales the dust of the asbestos, the fibrous particles will find a place deep inside the lungs and heart of the person and the body will find in impossible to throw it away. The fibers of the asbestos will penetrate into the lining of the lungs (pleura), the heart (pericardium), or around the abdomen (peritoneum). These parts are very sensitive and the presence of the fiber here in the region will result in small tumors that are very difficult to remove because they are in very sensitive areas of the vital organs of human beings. In course of time it will ultimately lead to mesothelioma, a serious form of lung cancer. The symptoms of the disease are usually gone unnoticed because many people will consider it as ordinary flu. But in course of time, when the person realized that he has been affected with asbestos cancer, it will be too late and he cannot be guided back to life.

Though it is very difficult to treat an asbestos cancer patient in an advanced stage, modern medicine has something to offer to the victims of the disease. But these treatments are very expensive and an ordinary man will find it very difficult get the treatment. The asbestos cancer attorneys are a dedicated lot who are fighting for the poor victims who are exposed to asbestos and in most cases these workers are not the culprits for their problem. The asbestos cancer attorneys will help the patients to get their medical expenses and the compensation.

Asbestos cancer case filing involves a lot of research and effort to get a fair compensation for the ones who are affected. Research is very much needed because most of the ones who are infected have industrial backgrounds and the American Navy has its own contribution to asbestos cancer because of their use of it in the past. It is estimated that more than 4.5 million people have been contributed to World War II armament and shipbuilding industries and they have unknowingly risked their lives to a killer disease. Moreover, the children of these workers are also at risk as when they came back from the industrial atmosphere the air that they breathe out will also contains the fiber and it will be passed on to the ones at home.

Asbestos Cancer Legal Options

Every passing year, thousands of people are being diagnosed or dying of asbestos cancer clinically known as mesothelioma. This is caused due to the over exposure to asbestos which is a compound containing silicon and oxygen atoms in their molecular structure. In spite of the knowledge that asbestos is a human carcinogen, many companies employed workers without taking any precautions. It was a knowing choice by the companies to make great profits with a deadly product at the risk of poor and unknowledgeable workers.

Hence if you are diagnosed with mesothelioma due to the negligence of an organization or an employer, then you are liable for certain compensations as per the mesothelioma laws. Though this is not going to offer you any physical solitude like curing your disease or alleviating it, it will at least help you lessen the financial loss caused due to this disease. The mesothelioma law is all about being compensated by the producers and distributors of asbestos and the best way to go about this is by hiring an experienced, knowledgeable, and good lawyer. All a lawyer requires is proof that you have been exposed to an asbestos zone. Give them the details of the period and location of the exposure, the product name, etc. and they will work on it to provide you with the best possible compensation.

Once you have found the right lawyer, you can file a lawsuit against the organization responsible for your condition. You are entitled to ask for compensation for the pain and suffering that you and your loved ones are undergoing as well as the expenses incurred due to such asbestos induced diseases. Some of the expenses for which compensation can be asked are:

Covering of medical expenses: The medical expenses associated with mesothelioma are extremely high because of the long term care required and the aggressive therapy. This might leave a big hole in your pocket if you do not get the necessary help and financial assistance.

Workers compensation for lost wages due to the illness: This varies from state to state and also depends on the classification of employment.

Group support for yourself as well as your loved ones: The trauma that you and your loved ones undergo because of this deadly disease is immense and hence compensation is required though it will not lessen it.

Travel expenses related to treatment of mesothelioma

Expenses incurred in hiring a good lawyer

Expenses which are not covered under the health insurance

Funeral expenses

As each case varies, additional expenses can be asked for. Hence, it is important to save all your medical and financial records. Every aspect of the case is handled by the lawyer itself as the lawyer understands that the client may be terminally ill and unable to do everything on your own. So all you need to do is furnish your lawyer with the necessary documents and answer a few simple questions. So it is very essential to hire the best lawyer you can find.

Asbestos cancer life expectancy

Asbestos cancer has been one of the serious threats in the modern world. It is an extremely aggressive cancer and till now there is no cure for the disease. As the name indicates, the disease has its origin from exposure to asbestos. The disease is also known as mesothelioma and there are plentiful people in the world suffering from this problem. Because of the severity of this type of cancer, doctors are hell bent on finding newer and better treatments and improving the life expectancy of the patients.

The Tragic Figure

The degree of severity of the disease is clear from the fact a mesothelioma patient will live only up to a maximum of one and a half years. Some very unfortunate patients live only up to 4 months. However, one cannot predict on the numbers because each case has to be considered individually. The big problem with the disease is that it is usually unnoticed for years and even for decades. The fibers of the asbestos that penetrates deep into the outer layer of the lungs and abdomen and it will remain there for a long time. All the efforts of the body to throw it out will only end up only in some inflammation of that area. The fist symptoms, similar to that of ordinary flu, pneumonia or bronchitis, may come even after three decades and will usually be unnoticed. Most patients will be diagnosed and found to be affected only at a later stage so that it becomes virtually impossible for the doctors to save them.

Factors Involved

The life expectancy of the asbestos cancer patients depend on a variety of factors like the stage of the disease, the age of the patient, the general health of the patient, the point at which it is diagnosed, whether the disease is localized or spreading and the type of treatments that are feasible to the patient. If the person has been exposed to asbestos in the past, it will be better if he goes for check ups at regular intervals if any of the symptoms arise. Since the symptoms of the disease will come out only at a later stage it will be advisable to take vigil upon the arrival of the killer disease for the ones who are exposed to asbestos.

Stage of the cancer

The life expectancy of an asbestos cancer patient depends on the stage of the disease. Though medical science has virtually found medicines for most of the diseases, asbestos cancer patients are an unlucky lot. There are medicines that can keep death for a long time, but the disease cannot be completely wiped out from the body purely because it affects the most sensitive parts of the body.

Asbestos cancer is a serious disease and the only hope lies in identifying the disease at the earliest. Chemotherapy and radiation have some effect on the patients and remember that it will be effective only at the initial stage; otherwise it can only delay the inevitable.

Asbestos Cancer Prognosis

Asbestos cancer has got wide attention in the recent times and this has been a serious problem not only in the developed world, but also in the developing world. The cancer occurs as a result of exposure to some asbestos fiber that will penetrate deep into the lungs and the heart. The main problem the person who has made contact with the fiber is that the body will not be able to expel the fiber and slowly, it will turn out to be cancerous. There are several instances of the disease as it was a commonly used material for years in the past. Still there are instances of the disease because it takes even decades to develop the disease.

Who is at risk?

Asbestos is still mined in many parts of the world and it is a natural material that consists of varying lengths of fibers. When asbestos is used or when some renovation takes place in old houses that are built with asbestos, the fiber and dust will spread in the air and naturally it will be swallowed or inhaled and thus it will come to the lungs of the ones who are present there. The immune system in the body will try to keep it away which in turn makes some inflammation. Scarring occurs as a result of the attempt of the body to throw it away and later it develops as an uncomfortable lung condition that could ultimately lead to the development of asbestos cancer.

The disease has spread to many parts of the world because of the ignorance of the users of asbestos products and the people who are most affected are the ones from the industrial setting, especially from chemical plants, oil refineries, machine shops, power plants, foundries, commercial and residential sites, and the ones who are engaged in government and private shipyards. The United States Navy has also contributed its share in the spread of the disease.

Diagnosis and treatment

The initial symptoms of the disease will be usually neglected since it begins with tight sensation of the chest, weight loss, cough and sometimes, vomiting. Many people consider it as ordinary flu and will be treated accordingly. In course of time, the tightness in the chest becomes severe and there will be difficulty in breathing and other symptoms will also come into action. Scans, x-rays and blood tests are usually performed to assess the situation and if the person is affected with asbestos cancer, he needs immediate medical attention. For the treatment of asbestos cancer also, chemotherapy and radiation are used.

Conclusion

Asbestos cancer is a serious problem and it need to be treated with utmost care. Though there are treatments, many of the patients know about the disease only at a later stage and this will make the treatment virtually impossible. The best thing one can do is to keep away from asbestos and if he has been exposed to it in the past, make regular check ups to make sure that he is clean.

Even though it has several uses, asbestos can also be a health hazard to people who are constantly exposed to it. When the products with asbestos contents are disturbed the light asbestos fibers are released into the air. These fibers are absorbed into the lungs while breathing. Being fibers they are trapped there and over a time they cause inflammation in the lungs and cause cancer.

There are many symptoms of asbestos cancer. They vary from type to type. Basically, there are four different types of asbestos cancer, or in medical terms, mesothelioma. Mesothelioma may affect lungs, stomach, abdomen, and heart. These are respectively called pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma, and pericardial mesothelioma. Though symptoms vary for each type of cancer, there are some common symptoms for all these diseases.

Loss of weight and fever are common for pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma. Persistent cough that gets worse over the time, shortness of breath, and constant chest pain are common symptoms for both pleural and pericardial mesothelioma. Nausea and vomiting are found in patients who are suffering from asbestos cancer related to heart and stomach. Mesothelioma of lungs is characterized by wheezing, hoarseness, blood in the sputum, pain in the lower back, and difficulty in swallowing. Swelling in the abdomen due to build up of fluids there, swelling of the feet, bowel obstruction, abdominal pain, abdominal blood clotting and anemia are classic symptoms for peritoneal mesothelioma. Palpitation and loss of appetite are found in patients having asbestos related cancer in the heart.

The presence of any of these symptom or a few of them in a person do not necessarily mean that the person suffers from mesothelioma. That person may be having some other minor health problem. Therefore, only an experienced doctor can conclude whether these symptoms are of asbestos cancer or not, and that too, after a thorough checkup.

The abovementioned symptoms usually prompt a doctor to order workups like chest x-ray, LFTs, CT scan, PET scan, etc. Chest x-ray and lung function tests are the normal procedures adopted to detect asbestos cancer of the lungs. Chest x-ray has only limited use to detect asbestos fiber in the lungs. But it reveals the signs of lung disease due to asbestos. A CT (computed tomography) scan can detect asbestos-related maladies. A biopsy done on lung tissues can reveal presence of asbestos fiber in the lungs. The lung tissues have to be obtained by surgery. This is a very reliable test to confirm asbestos in the lungs.

The unfortunate fact about cancer caused by asbestos is that the symptoms do not appear for decades after contracting the disease. That makes treatment for such diseases more complicated. It is better for anyone who is exposed to asbestos to tell one’s doctor about that fact. That will give a chance for the doctor for watching the patient for the slightest symptom and investigate it.

Asbestos Cancer Treatment

Asbestos cancer is caused by constant exposure to asbestos particles in the air for a long time. People working at the asbestos mines and work places where asbestos is handled as a building material are the main victims of this disease. When the asbestos in the form of a mineral just mined or in the form of manufactured articles are broken up, millions of tiny and very light particles escape into the air. They enter into the human body through air, water and food. These particles which cannot be destroyed get deposited in some parts of the body and causes asbestos cancer in the long run. The unfortunate part is that it takes 20 to 30 years for an asbestos cancer patient to show visible symptoms of the disease. Moreover, the average life span of a patient after detection of the disease is two to three years only.

There is no known cure for complete recovery from asbestos cancer. The treatment given once diagnosed for the disease is aimed at prolonging the life span and removing the pain of the patient. The three main treatments resorted to for this purpose include:

Surgery

Chemotherapy

Radiation

In surgery, the aim is to slow down the progress of the disease. If the asbestos cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, some tumors can be removed and a great part of the asbestos deposits in the affected part can be taken out with surgery. In the later stages, this is not possible. At such times, surgery is used to make breathing easy and the patient may be made to feel more comfortable.

Chemotherapy uses very strong medicines. It intends to destroy as many cancerous cells as possible. That retards the growth and multiplication of the cells by division. The drugs so far used for this purpose were very toxic and they also destroyed some of the healthy cells. Of late, some new drugs have been formulated to reduce the side effects and they are less toxic.

The third method of treatment for asbestos cancer is radiation. High doses of radiation are used for killing the cancer cells in a localized area. This also aids surgery by reducing the tumors prior to surgery. Radiation reduces the discomfort of the patient. Some healthy cells are also killed by radiation. But this damage is at a greatly reduced rate when compared to chemotherapy. The target of radiation can be more accurate.

Apart from these mainstream methods, alternate treatments are also tried. At least in some cases the suffering of the patient is found to be reduced greatly by alternative therapy. In any case, early detection of asbestos cancer is very important. It allows more time for treatment and provides a chance to increase the life span of the patient to a maximum period. Early detection also permits a reduction of pain and discomfort to the patient. It is better to introduce good safety procedures at the asbestos mines and other places where workers are exposed to asbestos clouds constantly. It will go a long way to alleviate the misery of some of the hardest working men.

Asbestos Cancer Types

Asbestos cancer or Mesothelioma is a deadly, aggressive and rare type of cancer that is caused due to the overexposure to asbestos. It develops in the mesothelial lining of the internal organs and body cavities. Since the symptoms are similar to those of the other diseases like pneumonia, influenza etc, its diagnosis is very difficult. The symptoms vary according to the location of the affected mesothelial lining. Based on this there are different types of asbestos cancer or mesothelioma.

1. Pleural Mesothelioma: This is the most common type that develops in the pleura or the pleural membrane, which is the lining of the lungs. This is developed when the thin asbestos fibers get trapped in the spaces between the pleura. Once these fibers are trapped they start to multiply abnormally resulting in the thickening of the pleural membrane. As a result fluid builds up in this region known as pleural effusion. This fluid pressurizes the lungs and the respiratory system causing breathlessness. The common symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are:

Severe breathing difficulty even when at rest

Weight loss

Fatigue

Severe dry cough

Coughing up of blood

Pain in the chest area

Painful breathing

Small lumps under the skin of the chest

Difficulty in swallowing

Fever or night sweating

2. Peritoneal Mesothelioma: This develops when the asbestos fibers get trapped in the spaces between the peritoneum membranes of the abdomen. The trapped fibers start multiplying resulting in fluid build up, membrane thickening and development of tumors that puts pressure on the abdominal organs. The common symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma are:

Fatigue and weight loss

Nausea and vomiting

Swelling and pain of abdomen

Fever and night sweating

Anemia

Constipation or Diarrhea

Lumps under the skin of the abdomen

3. Pericardial Mesothelioma: This develops when the fibers get trapped in the pericardial membrane which surrounds and protects the heart. These results in fluid build up and pressure on the heart. Since the symptoms are very similar to those of the other heart conditions it is difficult to diagnose this form of cancer. Some of the common symptoms are:

Chest pain

Irregular heartbeat or palpitations

Fatigue

Cough

Heart murmurs

Fever or night sweating

Breathing difficulty

4. Testicular Mesothelioma: This is the rarest form of malignant mesothelioma that develops in the membranous lining of the testicle. This membrane is known as the tunica vaginalis. It offers support and protection to the reproductive .organs. Because of its rarity there are no set symptoms for testicular mesothelioma except for a couple of noticeable symptoms which are:

Swelling of the scrotum

Lumps in the testicle

Treatment of this form of cancer involves the surgical removal of a portion or the entire testicle depending on the severity of the cancer. This is followed by chemotherapy and radiation to destroy the remaining cells.

In most cases the diagnosis is made only at a very late stage due to the long latency period of this disease. After exposure, it takes years for the symptoms to appear. Hence it not only makes the diagnosis difficult but also complicates the treatment procedures. So prevention is always better than cure as this is a 100% preventable disease.

Asbestos are silicate compounds containing silicon and oxygen atoms in their molecular structure. They occur naturally in the environment as fiber bundles that can be separated into durable, thin threads. These fibers are:

Heat resistant

Fire resistant

Resistant to other chemicals

Do not conduct electricity

Due to these properties asbestos is used widely in many industries especially building and construction industries for cement and plastic strengthening, for insulation, sound proofing of rooms, fireproofing and roofing.

Asbestos when released into the air can be swallowed or inhaled without knowing because they are fine particles and have no taste or smell. These fibers stick to the walls of our internal organs like lung, abdomen etc and over the time they get accumulated and lead to severe health problems.

Asbestos is a known human carcinogen and over exposure to asbestos results in a condition commonly known as asbestos cancer or mesothelioma. This is a rare and aggressive cancer that develops in the mesothelial cells lining the internal organs as well as the body cavities.

In most cases, this type of cancer is diagnosed only during the later stages. This is because of the long latency period of the disease. Due to this reason the life span of an inflicted person from the point of diagnosis to death is less than 24 months. Since the symptoms shown are common to those of other diseases it is also difficult to diagnose mesothelioma. The symptoms include:

Fatigue

Chest pain

Severe weight loss

Severe and persistent coughing

Fever or night sweating

Breathlessness

There is no known cure for mesothelioma. But to make life easier or living with the cancer easier many of the affected patients wish to undergo whatever treatments available. Some of the treatment options for this condition are:

Chemotherapy

Radiation

Surgery

Immunotherapy

Gene Therapy

The effects of asbestos on the human body were known to be harmful for years by the companies who employed workers to work in these hazardous conditions. But no precautions were taken to alleviate its effects on the workers because the companies knew of its long latency period of the disease as well. So they chose to make a great profit with a deadly product. Those at an increased risk of developing this deadly disease are those:

Who work at an asbestos mine

Who work at an asbestos mill

Who work at shipyards

Heating industry workers

Construction industry workers

Producers of asbestos and its products

Different trades men

Families and friends of workers who work in asbestos related industries

People who live close by such industries

The risk of developing this cancer is mainly influenced by two factors.

The amount of asbestos to which the person is exposed

The duration of the exposure

As the number of asbestos fibers in the body increases the likelihood of developing serious diseases also increase. But the worst and the best part of this deadly disease is that it is a 100% preventable disease.
