Asbestos cancer life expectancy
Asbestos cancer has been one of the serious threats in the modern world. It is an extremely aggressive cancer and till now there is no cure for the disease. As the name indicates, the disease has its origin from exposure to asbestos. The disease is also known as mesothelioma and there are plentiful people in the world suffering from this problem. Because of the severity of this type of cancer, doctors are hell bent on finding newer and better treatments and improving the life expectancy of the patients.
The Tragic Figure
The degree of severity of the disease is clear from the fact a mesothelioma patient will live only up to a maximum of one and a half years. Some very unfortunate patients live only up to 4 months. However, one cannot predict on the numbers because each case has to be considered individually. The big problem with the disease is that it is usually unnoticed for years and even for decades. The fibers of the asbestos that penetrates deep into the outer layer of the lungs and abdomen and it will remain there for a long time. All the efforts of the body to throw it out will only end up only in some inflammation of that area. The fist symptoms, similar to that of ordinary flu, pneumonia or bronchitis, may come even after three decades and will usually be unnoticed. Most patients will be diagnosed and found to be affected only at a later stage so that it becomes virtually impossible for the doctors to save them.
Factors Involved
The life expectancy of the asbestos cancer patients depend on a variety of factors like the stage of the disease, the age of the patient, the general health of the patient, the point at which it is diagnosed, whether the disease is localized or spreading and the type of treatments that are feasible to the patient. If the person has been exposed to asbestos in the past, it will be better if he goes for check ups at regular intervals if any of the symptoms arise. Since the symptoms of the disease will come out only at a later stage it will be advisable to take vigil upon the arrival of the killer disease for the ones who are exposed to asbestos.
Stage of the cancer
The life expectancy of an asbestos cancer patient depends on the stage of the disease. Though medical science has virtually found medicines for most of the diseases, asbestos cancer patients are an unlucky lot. There are medicines that can keep death for a long time, but the disease cannot be completely wiped out from the body purely because it affects the most sensitive parts of the body.
Asbestos cancer is a serious disease and the only hope lies in identifying the disease at the earliest. Chemotherapy and radiation have some effect on the patients and remember that it will be effective only at the initial stage; otherwise it can only delay the inevitable.
